Building a Fence $50 at a time!
In March my husband must have picked up 20 piles of dog poop from our back yard. Then when my son cut the grass we noticed there were some yellowing spots, guessing from dog pee. We take care of our yard, we pay to have weed control and we have put in a sprinkler system. Our neighbors on the other hand have a yard of weeds, more weeds than grass as a matter of fact.
This weekend we are putting the fence back up. We are paying for it, which we have no problem since they gave us the fence to put on the other side of our house. Well, the posts are $7.72 each except for the corner post which is $12.77. The rails are $9.77 each. We need 9 posts and 27 rails, plus the pieces to make the gate.
As luck would have it we on Sunday we got a $10 off a $50 order for Lowes Home Improvement. Then on Wednesday we got the same flier in a free pennysaver type circular. Then again on Thursday we got yet another one in the local paper that gets delivered to our home once a week. Me being me, I went today and got $50 worth of stuff at Lowes then on the way home I figured out that I would need several more, so I went and paid $.50 per paper to get 3 more of this coupon. We only have a mini van and we will have to make several trips to Lowes to get the rails anyways. I have made 3 trips so far and saved $30. Pretty good I think. I am sure when they put that coupon out they figured people would not think to get more coupons and just spend way more than $50 on a purchase. the Lowes is only 2 miles from our house so even with the several trips we are still saving money.
Then to make it an even sweeter deal, I am swinging by Food Lion where they have an internet printable coupon for $4.99 off a bakery order. I am making many small orders and the bakery item costs between $.80 and $2.89 and the rest of that money goes towards my order. They have Scott paper towels on sale for $1.00 and for every 2 that you buy you get a free tote bag that is full of coupons one of which is $.50 off paper towels. I have about 20 rolls of paper towels and 10 of these free bags (that all had the coupons). My kids are happy they got donuts, I also got sandwich rolls and the other filler items have been Land O Lakes butter (there is a MIR for this too), animal crackers, Zip Loc bags, Milk, Ice Cream, Turkey, Cheese, tater tots...the list goes on. The most I have spent on any one order was $1.36. I think it is worth the time and gas to get these items since it has been on my way anyway.

CVS and Lowes Foods
First I stopped at CVS and really had nothing in particular in mind. I ended up getting 2 packages of cotton balls, Lamisil foot spray, 2 dove shampoo and 3 excederin and spent $1.12 after a $4/$20 coupon, 3 $2 coupons excederin, $3 coupon for Dove and $1 crt. I got back $8.50 in ECB.
Then I did my secret shop. After that I went to Staples and spent too much money on business supplies (toner and 7 port hub), then went to look for a purse at Marshalls and Home Goods, and bought nothing. Then I went to Lowes Foods because I needed milk. I ended up getting 1 gallon of milk, 4 daisy sour cream, 1 bag cat treats and 1 bag cat food all for $1.01.
So now I have about $1 left of my grocery budget which is $200 bi monthly. This milk should get me through until the 15th. Also in the $200 amount, I was using it for my secret shops that I will be reimbursed for next month which is actually about $60. I am pretty impressed with myself.
We are going out to dinner tonight. Not my idea, my husbands.

I really lucked out, at Harris Teeter they are clearancing out a bunch of laundry detergent including like Tide for $2.94 a bottle. I got 4 bottles of detergent and 2 bottles of Downy plus a few other things for $14 after coupons. I saved 74% on this round today. It is nice to be at this point now. It has taken me over 6 months to get to the point where I only have to buy when I can save over 50% on what I am buying. I actually found a lot they were clearancing out. A helpful hint is if the number ends in a 4 then it is as low as it will go and on clearance, it is not just on sale.
Yesterday I went to Walgreens. I have decided I just can’t stand buying from there. They do the register rewards (coupons that are good for money off your next purchase) and they just have been a total pain to do it. I don’t have these problems when I shop at CVS. I don’t know why I bother even trying to do Walgreens. I end up paying more out of pocket too.

Today at Food Lion and Harris Teeter
I went to Food Lion and I got 4 marinated Hormel pork Lion and 2 Smithfield pork loin, all of this was 50% off because of the sale they have going on.
Then I went across the street and Harris Teeter has a deal going on where you buy 4 12pks of Coke on sale for $10 and you get a free 12pk of Sprite or Sprite Zero. And to make the deal even sweeter I had a BiLo coupon, buy 4 12pks of coke and get 3 free 2ltrs. So for all this I only spent $31.24. It seems like a lot of money, I am not used to spending so much in one trip, but really I saved $70.56 in coupons and specials. So I actually saved 69%. That is pretty good. I don’t normally buy this much soda, but we are going camping in June for a week and I am trying to buy stuff as it goes on sale now, rather than have to buy it and pay full price the week we leave.
What do we do for fun that is CHEAP.

What a great way to spend a HOT day. Other than this particular place I can’t say there is anything else I like about Florida. For the record, we have been to all the amusement parks and we lived only 1 hour away from Orlando (we even lived there for 9 months), and 30 minutes from Daytona Beach and St Augustine.
This picture is Crabtree Falls located off the Blue Ridge Parkway is about 1 mile long. The hike is moderate. Part of the path is somewhat steep, but well marked.

We have been to many waterfalls in NC, all of which have been free except for one. And I think the state has since purchased it and I think it will be cheaper if not free soon. One of the best books that I have is called North Carolina Waterfalls: A Hiking and Photography Guide by Kevin Adams. This is by far the best resource if you like waterfalls and live in NC. He lists many waterfalls that are not listed anywhere else. Why pay when you can see so many for free, and that includes some state parks. The book also has some really nice pictures. He is a professional photographer and has written a few books.
Roaring Fork a very easy hike along a gravel path about .5 miles long.

Mystery Shopping
The first place I joined they only paid for yours and a companion’s food. The max reimbursement was $40 for the two of us and I guess for back then (8 yrs ago) that actually is pretty good. Then they started really getting picky about the forms. Then they started grading me. My thought was, for the amount they are paying me it really wasn’t worth it so I stopped working for that company. They wanted me to write 12 paragraphs. It was not simple yes or no questions. EVERY answer needed a 50 word paragraph.
I started working for another company and they only wanted yes or no answers. I shopped mostly fast food, Wendy’s mostly. There were some other ones that I did through a Coke promo. I got to eat at Carabba’s, Applebees, Buca di Peppo, Bennigans, and Denny’s. I hate Denny’s, and the one in the city I lived in was by far the worst of them all. At that particular one, the waitress actually contested what happened. The fact is she didn’t say “COCA COLA” or “COKE” and she said I didn’t even give her a chance. I mean come on, she wanted them to think that she immediately walked up to me and I never gave her a chance and immediately screamed out “I want a COKE!” Had nothing to gain by her passing or failing so why would I do that? But then again, it was Denny's. That turned me off from secret shopping for a while.
When we moved to NC we moved close to a Blockbuster and I somehow got hooked up with a place that did Blockbusters, KFC’s for secret shops and they also did Bruegger’s Bagels. The nice thing about the whole Mystery shopping is that you can go somewhere you might not normally have gone too.
Recently my husband got me back into secret shopping. I had done it when we first moved to NC, but then stopped because I had gotten into eBay so heavily. About 2 months ago his friend at work sent him a link to one secret shopping site that does shops at a particular store I shop at all the time. Since then I have made over $350+ in 2 months. I have since signed up at a few more sites, the first site only seems to let me make about $180 a month. Plus I have shopped my one local store to death so I need to diversify. Last night I did a new chicken place, I will be doing 3 burger joints and 3 grocery stores in the next 4 days.
Is this all going to be worth it with all the driving that I will have to do? Of course it will. We will have to claim it on our taxes since I certainly plan on making more than $600 in a year and the mileage is tax deductible ($.41 a mile). A more fuel efficient vehicle would be nice, but that is probably not in the cards. Now that I am doing this through at least 2 companies I try and schedule shops in the same areas on the same days. This way I can go out a little further and it will make it more worthwhile. On Wednesday I am having breakfast at one place, lunch at another and then a grocery shop at after that all of which are mystery shops.

All things saving money-what I have learned so far
We have managed to get ourselves into a world of debt. When we moved here 4 years ago we had everything paid off except our minivan and of course our new home. About 6 months after we moved here I got into a car accident and we had to get a new vehicle (didnt have to be new but our used one ended upcosting us too much monthly), so our car payment doubled. Then we proceeded to spend atleast $1000-$2000 more a month than we made. You can see where this his headed.
I am relatively new to the saving money thing (ask my husband) but I jumped in with both feet and haven't looked back. The end of July I was told to either find a job or start saving money. So being as I don't take direction well, and if I got a job my family would never see me, I decided I would save money. And boy, what a difference it has made. No longer do I have to leave this room while my husband does our weekly bills. Now he is a lot less stressed, at least I think he is. He also is more than willing to share my money saving techniques (when it comes to shopping) with his coworkers and friends. He will frequently forward me emails from his friends/coworkers with the questions they ask him.
When I would go shopping I would think nothing of going to BJ’s Wholesale Club and dropping $400 in one order. Or going to my local grocery store and spending $200 in one trip, then go to the store everyday there after and spend an additional $40-$90 daily. Even Walmart where I thought I was saving money, I wasn’t. I could never stay on the grocery side and stick to buying just groceries. I could justify a monthly trip to Walmart and spend and additional $300 with the other spending I was doing too. Plus we went out to eat at least once a week, if not twice, depending on what was going on that week. Plus I was willing to buy crap my kids wanted without thinking twice.
The first thing I did was print off pretty much EVERY internet coupon I could get my hands on. I also started reading up on anything frugal, signed up for newsletters and signed up for free stuff. Me, being me, instead of doing a little bit at a time, I was trying to do it all at once (plus we were training for the MS 150 by cycling 100+miles on the weekends). I would get my paper cut out every coupon, then look over my sales and be in a hurry to use a coupon. I was going to Rite Aid and CVS and getting items that I THOUGHT were a good buy, and the free after rebate (FAR) items. I was going to all the grocery stores, including Super Target and Walmart, Dollar General, pretty much everywhere there was something on sale that I was interested in. Looking back, I shouldn’t have bought most of what I did at the times I did. And the CVS thing, that I had a very hard time with since I was trying to do so much at one time. Quickly I stopped the drug store stuff, it was just too much.
Here is what I have learned, some of it the hard way. But if you are reading it you are most likely are where I was a few months ago. Don’t make some of the same mistakes I did.
Take it slow- Focus on one area at a time. Shoot for a small reduction in your grocery bill. I remember when my husband said “If you can get our grocery bill down by 30% that will make me happy.” Well I have taken our monthly grocery bill (which includes anything you can buy in a normal grocery store) from about $2,000 a month to $500 a month and this month I am shooting for $400 for a family of 5.
Multiple coupons- Really, you need multiple quantities of the same coupons. There are many ways you can get multiple quantities. What I personally do it I get ONE paper delivered to my house on Sunday (we actually get it Friday –Sunday, but we only need the Sunday, it was cheaper this way). I go through the coupons as soon as I get up. No really, I mean it, I go out to the street in my bathrobe and get the paper. I then look at the coupons in the paper (though there are many places that lists them by state on line, though they are not always exactly right) and decide how many more copies I want. Sometimes I won’t get anymore papers. Lately I have been getting 4-8 more copies of the paper though. I just go up to the Paper box and buy them out of there. For me they are $1.00 each, if I were to buy them at CVS like I have read others do and use the ECB they are $1.50. Of course you can ask family and neighbors for their inserts but for me, I have found people are just too lazy to do this for me. It is too difficult for them to set them aside for me. I have even said I will take them after you cut out what you want but IF I get any it is short lived and lasts only 2 weeks tops. Every once in a while my husband will bring me an insert that has some missing that a co worker brings to him. That is still appreciated. Another good source is eBay or The Coupon Clippers. I buy mine from eBay. I have also found that buying them this way is sometimes better. Not everyone gets the same cents off coupons that the rest of the country gets. For instance a few weeks ago I got a coupon in my circulars for $.30 of Land O Lakes butter. On ebay I found $.55 off Land O Lakes Butter. I bought 20 of the Land O Lake Butter. Is it worth it to buy them off the internet? I feel it is. If I can save more than I spend then it is worth it. Same goes for buying extra papers. If a paper costs me $1.00 out of the box to buy it and there are $5.00 worth of coupons I want, then to me it is worth it. You can also join forms where you can trade coupons too. Also I am told some Libraries have a box to take and leave coupons. Some people dumpster dive or go to recycling centers. I can’t do this because our recycling center and trash called “convenience site” here specifically say no dumpster diving/trash picking. I have also heard that some stores will let you take them out of the Sunday papers that don’t sell. I know in Florida at the store I worked at we actually sold the Sunday paper all week, though that seems to be something particular to Florida.
Try not to be brand loyal- I am lucky in the respect that for most things we are not brand loyal. My family could care less what shampoo they use, or toothpaste, deodorant, milk, meat, nuttin! Well except Mac N Cheese it does have to be Kraft, though I don’t buy it too often I think my son gets migraines from it when he has too much. Most everything else we don’t care. I have read people have to have certain ketchup, mayo, mustard, that just blows my mind. I will say there are a few things that I won’t buy or if I do it had better be free so I can donate it. Like Jiff peanut butter, I never have liked Jiff, but I do have it in my pantry, I think my husband doesn’t care.
Always be on look out for overages from coupons-even if you won’t use the items. Last month I was buying Tabasco Hot Sauce because I could get $.50 overage with my coupons on each one. I was able to buy all sorts of stuff with that $.50 overage. I was buying 6-8 at a time and using that money to pay for my bad habit of International Flavored Coffee creamer. I have never even opened a bottle of hotsauce. I donated 30 bottles of hot sauce to my husband’s friend church. If you itemize your taxes you can get the write off on it if you donate a lot. We just donated $500 worth of stuff to this place.
Stockpile-simply put, you have to buy large amounts when it is at what you feel is its lowest price. You will quickly learn what lowest price means and if you pay attention all or keep a price book (I just pay attention). I am sure I bought a bunch of stuff when it was not at its lowest point. As a matter of fact I was so busy trying to stock up (I guess I am somewhat of a hoarder) I didn’t always think “is the price going to go any lower”…But hind site is 20/20.
Join a forum where they discuss stores and sales- and make sure it is an active one. When I first started I joined a forum. I stayed on that forum for a little while. I learned some things. They actually had some great leads to online deals (I got a 12 pc set of Circulon pots for $55 DELIVERED). The coupons and individual grocery stores on this site were not all that great. Then I found this place call Hotcouponworld.com OH MY, things have changed since then. That place is far superior to the first place I went. Plus they have morals and they don’t let you talk about things that are illegal in the coupon world. They also list each individual grocery store and most have what the sales are for that week. Then people post what deals they find. They do coupon match ups for you, list the Catalina deals (those coupons that you get after you pay for your groceries), list what coupons/rebate forms can be found at what stores and what they find on clearance at their store.
Rebates-I never used to be a rebate person. I was the one that would take the form then never get around to filling it out and sending it in on time. And that is exactly what the rebate issuer is hoping! Now I do it and I have gotten some sweet little checks. It is almost like Xmas when you find one in your mailbox. My husband has been taking mine and depositing them in a retirement fund for me. Hey every little bit helps right. Also Rite Aid has a much simpler rebate form. All you have to do it go to the site, set up your free account and then put in the receipt information that is it. At the end of the month you submit to get your check and about 2 weeks later you get it in the mail. Walgreens (Wags) has one too, but you do have to mail that one in but it is all on one form. You submit it at the end of the month too. Plus they will give you an extra 10% if you agree to accept payment on a Walgreens gift card. This is good; you can then buy the next months rebate items with that gift card. Also on all rebate items you can use coupons too.
CVS-Ok, now I did mention the CVS thing a little bit earlier. IF you are not good at math this may not be your thing. But there are sites you can go to and they will do all the work for you. After I had the coupons and sale issues under my belt I gave the CVS thing another try. Glad I did. I got it this time. Now I know I never need to pay for toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, make up, moisturizers, shampoo, conditioner, plastic bags, laundry soap, beauty supplies, dryer sheets, deodorant, pain meds, female items, diapers, and candy ever again. Pretty much everything you can buy in a drug store (except prescriptions, tobacco and beer) can be purchased for free of just literal pennies. I have tried to explain the whole CVS thing to friends and family. Either I am not doing a good job of explaining it or they are just to lazy to do it. I bet it is a little bit of both-but mostly laziness. It isn’t rocket science. You buy what is free after ECB (extra care bucks). ECB are store credit…Like all last month they had if you bought Colgate tooth paste you got $2.99 back in ECB, and that ECB could be used to buy another Colgate toothpaste. They can also be combined with coupons. So if bought the second toothpaste and used your $2.99 ECB and a $1.00 coupon then you would have an extra dollar to spend on that transaction. That is called overage. They do a good job explaining this at hotcouponworld.com. Walgreens has a program somewhat similar, but I personally not a fan of Walgreens. They like to issue store coupons, so if you forget to use the stupid store coupon you are then charged the shelf or sale price. Why can’t they just put the item on sale and let everyone have it at that sale price. Of course they are banking you won’t even look at the flyer and if you do, then hope you will forget to give them the coupons. I like to forget to give the coupons (not on purpose) and then return the item which requires a manager and make them rering it at the coupon price. It makes the managers actually work.
Rainchecks-Most stores have rainchecks. So when you go to the store and the item is on sale and they are out of it get a raincheck. Most rainchecks last 30 days or longer. It should say on the raincheck itself. At one of my stores their rainchecks don't expire, so I save them for when they have triple coupons. Also something else I have been doing is getting a raincheck if I ordered coupons and they haven't come in yet so I can still get the sale price when I do finally get the coupons. I just did this last week. The coupons I ordered didn't come until the day after the sale ended, so the last day of the sale knowing the mail had come and my coupons weren't in it I went to the store and got a raincheck. This also works well if you don't want to get 20 boxes of something right then, getting the rain check (even multiple rainchecks) can help you not have to store quite so much. Like when my local grocery store had ice cream buy one get two free. That is a lot of freezer space that a 1.75qt of ice cream takes up. I wish I had gotten several rain checks.
One of the questions I get asked is “Yeah but, it is worth it to drive around to get this stuff?” Well, I think it is. I am not traveling 50 miles to get just one tube of tooth paste. Last summer I had found this Iams coupon for $3.00 off ANY bag of cat food. If you took it too Dollar General they had 2lb bags of cat food there that were $2.75 each. You do the math, that means at the very least free, if not overage (depends on how attentive the cashier is). I acquired 70 Iams coupons for less than $5 on eBay and then my hunt started. First of all, Dollar General was only getting a case of this at a time. A case contained 12 bags. Not every store had 12 bags on the shelf, so me being the obsessive person that I am decided I would go to as many stores as it takes to use up the 70 coupons. By the way I have 4 cats, so if you were wondering if I needed it, yes, that is also the cat food they ate at that time and still do, I still have quite a bit of it left. After the first attempt I went on a Dollar General shopping spree and hit about 6 stores to the north of me then another day I hit another 6 stores to the northwest and west of me. I did it, I got all 70 bags all for free or better. Was it worth it? I think so, I did also get a few other things too while I was out on those trips too.
Saving money TAKES TIME. If it were easy everyone would do it. It drives me nuts when those that don’t have (or claim they don’t have) won’t do the coupons or even try and save. Yet they still complain they have no money. I spend a lot of time seeking out the deals. BUT part of that is my own doing. There are a lot of resources out there that do the work for you like "The Grocery Game" "Hot Coupon World" and "Coupon Mom" plus others. My absolute favorite is when someone thinks you can “contribute more” because you can save more. Is that fair to me? Just because I don’t have a full time job outside of the home doesn’t mean I don’t work and make money for my family. As it is now, with what I have been doing, I “make” at least $2000 a month, between cutting our grocery bill down to $500 a month, my eBay and the secret shops. Plus we don’t go out to eat nearly as much anymore saving us more money.
Also I read a lot where people whine "they don't double coupons here" Florida doesn't have any that I am aware of. But also realize that at those stores that double they usually charge more for groceries. So unles you are able to ONLY get items when they are on sale and you have a coupon then that isn't always better. I have a Food Lion not far from me and I shop there, they still have free stuff after coupon and they do not double. People rave about Publix in Florida having great deals and they do not double. But what I have found it the best deal are found at the stores that have higher prices becasue their sale prices tend to be lower. The key is sticking to the "Loss Leaders" they have. Meaning the prices are so low they might actually be loosing money. They are banking on you going to that store for that really cheap item, then buying more than just those loss leaders. Right now I have 20 $1.00 coupons for Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta and Food lion had it on sale for a dollar. I will have to pay the $.02 tax per box, but I will be getting my 20 boxes of $.02 pasta when some spaces frees up in my pantry.
I have so much stuff in my house now. I never realized that saving money means more stuff! I have had to convert a shelf that I had for eBay stuff into a stockpile for my HBA and non foods , my pantry is so full I don’t have any more room and my freezer is stuffed fill (we had to buy one for the garage too) and so is my refrigerator/freezer too. My kids jokingly say we are ready if anything like “Jericho” happens.
eBay
You may be wondering how I did it.
BUY MY BOOK!
No, just kidding, I don’t have a book to sell. I am not here trying to get you to buy anything from me, as a matter of fact you won’t see me listing my eBay ID. I am not here to solicit sales for what I sell eBay. I have no problem telling how I got started but I feel it is in my best interest to not create more competition for myself in my particular selling field.
I always tell people that want to get started, assuming they have never done it before, that they need to start buy selling items found in their homes they want to get rid of. Clothes, antiques, pretty much anything. FIRST look to see if anyone else has sold any by doing a completed item search on eBay and see if it is actually worth your time to list. Is something only sold for $.99? If so then it probably isn’t worth it for you to waste your time and money to list it. After you find something to list, and maybe sell it you might find out you don’t like doing the eBay thing or that there is actually WORK involved in selling on there. There are so many who think it is easy. But like in life, you get out of it what you put into it. So if you want to work very little then doesn’t expect much out of it. If you are willing to jump in full force and find a good selling niche then you will probably do well.
How did I do it? I first started by selling my kids Videos on half.com. After I saw how well I did (some of those Disney videos were out of print). I then started going to yard sales, first buying just video tapes, then took a chance on books. There is a rush you get when you sell a Text book for $100 that you paid $5.00 for. My husband and I would drag our 3 kids in our 1993 Plymouth Sundance to yard sales all day. Make them get up at 7am, promise them some kind of a treat from the convenience store and have them totally trash the back seat, but we didn’t care as long as they let us go and left us alone. After we started to diversify and I got my first Kodak Easy Share digital 1.9 mega pixel camera we started to buy different things. I started out buying jeans and jean shorts.
During this time my dad’s realtor had a foreclosure he wanted my dad to clear out. My dad somehow got me to go there with him. There was this old Pyrex Butterprint Cinderella bowl from the late 50’s early 60’s. I just fell in love with it. I took it home then found myself looking it up on eBay and buying them on there. But what I also noticed was what else sold on there in that particular category. So now I had one more thing to look for at yard sales. It just progressed from there. I got some older patterns of Corelle, listed them. Then I saw that the new patterns sold well too. I love Corelle and Pyrex (both owned by Corning) and so I started going to the Corning/Corelle outlet store (plus other brands sold by World Kitchen LLC) and buying stuff there than ANYONE could buy. I would sell it for sometimes 500% markup on ebay! I was hooked. We would go to yard sales but I got pretty good at only having to spend a minute or two scanning yard sales to decide if there was anything I wanted.
At this time I also was really packing on the pounds. My son was born the year before and as usual I gained all my baby weight back PLUS….I was a size 18-20W…OUCH! I somehow found out that Tommy Hilfiger sold women’s plus sizes at certain stores. TH was really popular at that time. I bought a few things on ebay, and then figured out that they were coming from Macy’s and Dillards. As luck would have it, I had a Dillards 25 miles south from where I lived. So I opened a Dillards account and started buying…sometimes over $1000 in one trip. Again another rush you feel when you spend money like that. I sold this stuff relatively quickly. I kept that up until we found out we might be moving to NC and then found myself in the position of not wanting to have to move my inventory, so I listed everything at my lowest amount I would take and sold off most of what I had.
After we moved to NC, I had to pretty much start all over again. Here in the specific city I live near thin is in, making the TH chubby girl size an unnecessary thing here. I too lost some weight (yeah for me!) and I didn’t get back into the TH chubby girl size sales. I started shopping at a particular store that they has so many of here. There are more than 15 of these stores within a 40 mile radius of where I live. I found some items at 75% off and took a chance. Then it just snowballed from there. My son was 4 at the time and our routine was drop his brothers off at school then we would go to the stores. I was doing well if I could hit 4 stores before noon. After 12 all the moms come out and are shopping with their kids and the kids become cranky because they need naps. My goal was always to try and be home by 1pm so I would have enough time to get the van unloaded and stuff unbagged before my kids got off the bus at 3:20.
How addicted was I? Well, first I would get up in the middle of the night to check my email to see what I had sold since I had been asleep for a few hours. I would get up in the morning and check my email and try and get stuff packed and ready to ship. I also was having to drive my sales to the post office and having to stand in line for international packages. One week before Thanksgiving I throw my 50 some odd packages to be shipped into my mini van to take to the post office. I have my 4 yr old son in there with me too. He is in the back seat playing his game boy. Then, I hit a vehicle that ran a stop sign. I hit him hard enough that I flipped his minivan onto its side. My first thought is “I need to call my husband.” Why? who knows, I guess because he is my hero and he will save me.
He says to me “ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? How is our son?”
Our son? Oh, that is right I had him in the back seat! I say “Ok I guess” and then people are taking my son out of the van and trying to get me to open my door so they can help me out and turn off my blaring horn. What do I say to those standing around asking if I am ok?
“I need to get these packages to the post office. How am I going to get them there now?” Not, where is my son, or how is he…nope, I am worried about my eBay stuff.
Long story short, I broke my foot (from trying to brake so not to hit him) and after 2 years of BS between the idiot Lawyers (mostly mine) and the insurance company we settled for $40,000, the lawyer got their third and out of my 2/3 the medical bill cost needed to be paid back, so we ended up with about $23,000 in our pockets, but don’t worry it burned a hole it is all gone within a few weeks.
I am pretty sure we have never lost money as a whole on eBay, I have always made a profit when all is said and done at the end of the year. We are also an actual business, we do have it set up in my husbands name for tax purposes but all he does it the bookkeeping and taxes, I do the rest.
Here are my thoughts on drop shipping and selling stuff that you do not have in your possession of. To clarify, I am referring to those places that want you to sell their items; all you have to do is list them and be the middle man. They will ship it for you. I don’t believe this is a good idea. I have read stories where people list something and the supplier is out when it comes time to ship it. Also the quality of some of these items is suspect. But the biggest thing is the competition on these items. Those things are a dime a dozen on eBay. I have ALWAYS bought my own products to sell on eBay. There is also an incentive to list it quickly when you know you have spent money on it. I am to the point where, for me, I do the majority of my sales during Xmas so I am in no hurry to get stuff listed now. My business makes enough money monthly that it pays for what little I buy in the off season so when I finally get it listed and sell it anytime between now and Xmas it is pure profit for me. For now this leaves me with enough time to obsess over whatever the flavor of the month is. In January and February it was saving money, coupons and finding the deals.
Gosh, where do I start?
I am a person of many hats. Lately my interests have been selling on eBay, saving money, secret/mystery shopping, When I get into something I REALLY get into it, I find out everything I can (until I get bored) and then go on from there. I will tell who ever is interested including complete strangers that make the mistake of asking me a question. Most times when someone asks me something I am passionate about- mystery shopping, eBay and, saving money
They soon find themselves sorry they asked. You could get stuck standing there LISTENING to me go on and on and on. I love talking about specifically those three things noted above.
