Estimate for the Van was wrong!

So when we had gone to the body shop to discuss fixing the van the guy told us it would be about $3000. We got the check in the mail that we will have to sign over to the bodyshop. It is for over $6000, and we have to pay an additional $500 which was our deductible.

Atleast that isn't coming out of our pocket.

As an added bonus last week we purchased a used truck for the oldest kid. It took me 2 weeks of constant looking to find it. We spent Monday running around to get it titled and tagged, so we only drove it home from the dealer about 7 miles up the road. The next day we took it to the shop so it could be worked on all day. The next day my son drove it about 40miles round trip. Then the next day it sat. Friday when we hopped in it to do some running around we don't get 2 miles from the house and there is a problem. I take it ot the mechanic and he says Tran$mi$$ion. Long story short, we have to get a new tran$mi$$ion which is way over $1000.

WIAT It gets better. As I sit here typing this I hear a dripping...I look over and there is water dripping from the ceiling! Yep a leak! House is all of 4 yrs old.

Why insurance rates are so high for TEENS

I have been gone for several days, not gone from my home but gone from blogging. I have been very busy.

Here is the story. I have a 17yr old son. He got his learners permit when he was 15yr 2 months, so as you can tell he is in no hurry. As a matter of fact, I kinda had to push him to get his permit. He passed the written test no problem. However he could careless about driving. He drove the first couple of weeks but probably my hollering at him for doing stupid things deterred him from driving. He would drive every once in a while but only because we made him do it. I tried having him drive to school, but we are usually running right on time or a bit behind and it was just to stressful for me, making it bad for him so I would end up driving (not that my son would get into the drivers seat without being told), plus he would be eating his breakfast half the time on the way. He went for MONTHS without driving and he just didn't care. In the state of NC you have to have your learners permit for a full year before you can even try to get your license. He got his permit in March of 2006. Finally this summer he started driving again.

We looked into how much it would cost to insure him as an occasional driver on both our vehicles. It would raise our rates over $800 a year. If we got a third car we would have to have him be a primary driver on one, again raising our rates. However after a year of him being accident free it would cut in half. And a year after that it would not be nearly as much.

In June I got the new Odyessy, as a matter of fact I think it was June 22, 2008. We went on a camping trip that next week and then 2 weeks later I urged my son to get his license. He got it on July 7th, I think....Using my new van of course. His dads car is a Saturn SL, standard shift with no working AC so he can't really drive it, plus it has 250,000+ miles on it.

My son has taken the van out only a few times. He is not your typical teenager that is just looking for an excuse to drive. He hasn't asked to go anywhere in my van, no movies nothing. I MADE him drive to the school (4 miles away) to get his schedule and I think he had driven to the store (1.5 Miles away) twice. Every time we would go out to do a secret shop (yes the kids come with me because they want to) or I would just go on a CVS, WAGS, HT, FL, LF shopping spree he would drive us. I have gotten better and I am not as anxious with him driving. He really is a good driver....

We decide that since my eldest son will have to drive to his college classes he WILL need a vehicle. IIII started looking August 1st. I became obsessed with this and have done tons of research on line. I have been looking at vehicles to see what they are worth. I am thinking we will spend no more than $5000 on a vehicle for him. Husband agrees, and we go out on Saturday. He hates car shopping. We go to the VW dealer, and now my husband is considering financing a vehicle. WHAT???? Anyway after a test drive he has had enough. I spend all of Sunday looking on line. I decided Monday I will go look. I have son drive me and his brothers (dad is at work) up to Hickory and back. I swing by a store to buy some inventory to make it a tax write off. We come back through Lincolnton where there are a ton of used car lots. I didn't stop anywhere other than ONE place in Hickory to look at vehicles.

August 5th my computer suddenly shut off. I was totally freaking out. I had 2 secret shops to do and my computer has a lot of stuff tied into it, 2 other computers print from my printer, requiring my computer to be on not to mention all my Ebay inventory that was NOT backed up. I took my computer to the local Joe and they said they would get right to it. Eldest son decides he wants to buy a laptop and I decide I will buy an external hard drive for my Ebay program and important things that should have been backed up right along. I drop off my computer and they say they will get right to it and call me when they find out what is wrong. We are now on our way to do the 2 secret shops I have scheduled. We get to a stop light and there is a Ford F-150 in front of us. The light turns green and the truck goes forward and so does my son. Well the driver of the truck must not have been paying attention and suddenly brakes and swerves off to the left to avoid hitting the cars in front of him. I see what is going on, and it is becoming apparent we are NOT going to be able to stop! I tell him to swerve and instead of swerving to the Left and turning off the road he kinda swerved the other way where cars were and he could only go so far. SO we ended up hitting the truck, doing about $3000 worth of damage to my new van.

This accident was a good example of inexperience causing an accident. Even though I was telling my son what to do you have to figure in reaction time. My reaction time, then I have to tell him what to do then he has to react! I could have avoided this accident, most experienced drivers could have avoided the accident.
So I then spent from Noon that day until that night taking care of accident things, like insurance, finding out where my vehicle was towed, finding a rental, getting the rental, keeping my husband informed, picking up my husband, going to the wrecker place to get the rest of what I should have gotten out of my van, then to top it off we had a pool meeting that night too. The next day was SUPPOSED to be the day that my husband had arranged to take off so we could look for a car (that was planned earlier that week before the accident). We spent that morning, going to the van signing papers at the body shop. Then husband finally decides to call the insurance company to ask the same questions I did a week prior plus what is going to happen with our insurance rates now. At 12:30 we finally can start looking at used vehicles. I have spent this whole week looking at cars. I haven't even been SHOPPING except for one secret shop where I had to buy 4 things and that was all I got.

Really!

So my family likes to go to the pool every night. They take towels, of course none of them can put the towels on the railing out front to dry. Today I decide I will wash these towels and round them up. I find them in the usual spots, wadded up in closets and in a wet heap on the floor. I put them in around 2:00pm and then forgot (I was busy making dinner, cleaning the kitchen...)at 6:30 I go up to switch them over and the load in the dryer is the usual not completely dry so I do the touch up. They all decide they are going to the pool now. All I hear is "Where are the towels?" And "I can't find any towels, what are we supposed to do?"
uumm really, BATH TOWELS- Do they not work at the pool? Are they really that dense?

Rebate Double Dipping

This is a great week do to rebate double dipping. There are several store promotions going on along with Manfacturer rebates too.
Rite Aid-buy 7 Kelloggs cereals get $5 can be used with the buy 10 Kelloggs $10 MIR from this weekends paper
Walgreens has Buy 4 Kelloggs cereals get a $5 RR used with the 10 Kelloggs MIR again
Walgreens also has Pert on Monthly FAR (use $2 pert coupon), and there is a Pert/Sure rebate buy $5 worth of Pert/sure and $5 of schools supplies, get $5 MIR
CVS has Pert and Sure on sale BOGO, and some school supplies BOGO (I did this one I had ECB to use)
Harris Teeter had Buy 8 Kelloggs items get $10 school cash, can be used with the Kelloggs Buy 10 for $10 MIR

The store rebate promotions only require input on line (Rite Aid and Walgreens), so you can mail away the receipt for the mail in rebates. The Harris Teeter one I did, after you purchased your 8 items it spit out a catalina to send in and that was all they wanted.

For all these promotions you can use coupons when you are purchasing your items. I personally spent $16.80 at 2 Harris Teeters and will get back $40 in MIR. I spent $1.11 at CVS on school supplies, pert and sure and will get back $5 MIR, and I am going to do that one again too.
This is a great time of the year for rebates. I just can't beleive how I didn't do this before. All this money sitting around and it only cost a stamp and an envelope!

AWESOME DEALS!

So I was reading on hotcouponworld.com about these 2 deals that have an overlap of ONE day. Today was the day!

At HT if you buy 8 kelloggs products you get a form to fill out and mail in and you get a $10 coupon good off your next 8 products (which I plan using on CHEEZITS! I never get good coupons for them!)

Well there is another Kelloggs rebate if you buy $10 you get a $10 rebate! The HT one has to be post marked by today and the Kelloggs one starts today.

I also went to Rite Aid to return the wrong item I purchases and buy the correct item and use my coupons that I had too.

So I spent $8.26 at HT and will get $10 rebate check and a $10 coupon to use on my next purchase I got the 6 boxes of cereal, 3 Kelloggs cereal straws and 2 eggos plus a dozen eggs not pictured.

Then I went to rite aid and spent $9.72 (olay cleanser and revlon nail polish) and will get $10.98 back!

I can't beleive the way I used to just throw my money OUT THE DOOR!

Pregnant cat update

Well I had fed the cat the one day and she laid in the garage all morning. The kids and I went to Burger King (I had a coupon!) and we came back and she was gone. Alex printed up the fliers for us to put in peoples mailbox asking if she was any ones cat.
She hasn't been back. It is sad, because we were looking forward to her kittens. We were going to be foster parents, and then make arrangements for people to take the kittens. I even was going to bring her inside to see if Miss Macey (the cat confined to my room) would accept her but she hasn't been back. Alex and I have gone and looked for her at night calling "kitty, kitty" and we keep an eye out for her on the back patio too. We are sad she is gone, but I bet someone took her in. She was VERY pregnant, and I can't believe she wouldn't come back if she couldn't. She knew there was food out there for her and she had been by a few nights in a row. Oh well, it is probably better this way. Alex and I (the kids too) have really turned into major cat lovers. I can totally see ourselves having many cats if it were possible, and we would become the "Crazy Cat People" on Brookdale Lane. I have no problem with that, and neither does Alex. I think he was almost as worried as I was about this cat, that we call Molly.

CVS, Rite Aid and Food Lion

After going through the coupons today and seeing the rebates I decided to head out to the stores today. I am still trying not to buy any groceries right now and work off my freezer.

First trip was CVS, they have Sure and Pert BOGO, plus there are coupons that were in the paper and I have extra coupons too. Also Pert/Sure have a rebate form out there for $5.00 when you buy $5 worth of pert or sure and $5 in school supplies.

So I purchased 2 Pert, 2 Sure, CVS brand Ibuprofen, 2 index tabs, 3 packs of pencils and a protractor. My cost after sales, ECBs and coupons was $1.11 (only because the cashier scanned the wrong coupon first! It should have been $.11). I had one ECB that was for $5.79 from childrens Advil (and yes I needed it for #3). I will also get $5 rebate check for the school supplies I purchased.

Then we went to Food Lion, I have some Flips that make 5 cans of tomato sauce $.26, so I got them and decided to get a case of Mason Jars (for drinking cups and canning). Total spent there was $11.01

From there we went to Rite Aid. They have a bunch of items that are free after Rebate and coupons. So I got the ones I wanted, Gillette Shampoo, Oil of Olay Cleanser, Fusion Razor, Noxema Razors, Acne Stuff, Conditioner, Hair color all of which I paid will be refunded to me. Rite Aid rebates are so easy, much easier then Walgreens too.

Kohls good and bad

Yesterday while I was at Target I thought I should go to Kohls too. They were doing the special that runs Friday night from 3pm til close then Saturday from 7am until 1pm, some items were special priced. Well, I also had a 15% off certificate, but didn't have it with me. I decided not to go then. It was also tax free weekend here and they are also running a special for every $50 you spend you get $10 to spend from August 4th until the 12th. So me being me, I decide since my 15% off certificate is good for 1 time on line and one days purchases in stores I figure I will check to see how much the items I want are on line. Well it was also free shipping for orders over $75.

I picked out about $400 worth of stuff. But after my 15% off it equalled $367.20. I should get my $70 in certificates too (though I am waiting on that one still). When I go to check out they don't take off the sales tax like they should. So I pay and I then send them an email telling them it is tax free weekend here in NC and I should not have to pay tax. Well they responded here is what they told me-

Tax-free holiday purchases are tax free on all shoes and clothing purchases under $100.00. Upon reviewing your order I have found that your order totaled $367.20 before sales tax and therefore does not qualify as a tax free purchase.

Are you kidding me? So by their logic, if I had broken up my order into 4 separate orders I would then qualify? HELLO! So I look it up on line and sure enough it states

G.S. 105-164.13C provides an exemption for certain items of tangible personal property sold between 12:01 A.M. on the first Friday in August and 11:59 P.M. the following Sunday. For 2008, the dates are Friday, August 1st through Sunday, August 3rd. Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item will be exempt.

I am a business, and I know how it works since I happen to pay sales tax quarterly. Per item does not mean per order. So I send them an email back telling them this. Well, I must have been the first person to every catch this, because now they have to LOOK INTO IT.
Well since I didn't get everything I wanted on line I decided to go into the store and purchase. I spend over $500 and guess what, IT WAS ALL TAX FREE! Plus I got and additional $100 to spend from the 4th until the 12th.

So now I am waiting to get my sales tax refunded from my online purchase. And I almost forgot! I went through Ebates so I will get $7.34 in my ebates account!

And when we got home, I went to the mailbox and had $33 worth of rebate checks in the mail!
