Yesterday while I was at Target I thought I should go to Kohls too. They were doing the special that runs Friday night from 3pm til close then Saturday from 7am until 1pm, some items were special priced. Well, I also had a 15% off certificate, but didn't have it with me. I decided not to go then. It was also tax free weekend here and they are also running a special for every $50 you spend you get $10 to spend from August 4th until the 12th. So me being me, I decide since my 15% off certificate is good for 1 time on line and one days purchases in stores I figure I will check to see how much the items I want are on line. Well it was also free shipping for orders over $75.
I picked out about $400 worth of stuff. But after my 15% off it equalled $367.20. I should get my $70 in certificates too (though I am waiting on that one still). When I go to check out they don't take off the sales tax like they should. So I pay and I then send them an email telling them it is tax free weekend here in NC and I should not have to pay tax. Well they responded here is what they told me-
Tax-free holiday purchases are tax free on all shoes and clothing purchases under $100.00. Upon reviewing your order I have found that your order totaled $367.20 before sales tax and therefore does not qualify as a tax free purchase.
Are you kidding me? So by their logic, if I had broken up my order into 4 separate orders I would then qualify? HELLO! So I look it up on line and sure enough it states
G.S. 105-164.13C provides an exemption for certain items of tangible personal property sold between 12:01 A.M. on the first Friday in August and 11:59 P.M. the following Sunday. For 2008, the dates are Friday, August 1st through Sunday, August 3rd. Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item will be exempt.
I am a business, and I know how it works since I happen to pay sales tax quarterly. Per item does not mean per order. So I send them an email back telling them this. Well, I must have been the first person to every catch this, because now they have to LOOK INTO IT.
Well since I didn't get everything I wanted on line I decided to go into the store and purchase. I spend over $500 and guess what, IT WAS ALL TAX FREE! Plus I got and additional $100 to spend from the 4th until the 12th.
So now I am waiting to get my sales tax refunded from my online purchase. And I almost forgot! I went through Ebates so I will get $7.34 in my ebates account!
And when we got home, I went to the mailbox and had $33 worth of rebate checks in the mail!
