Stupid Flat Tire! Walmart, Rite Aid and Harris Teeter

I ran over a razor blade somehow and it made my tire go flat. I called around BEFORE I knew exactly if I needed a new tire or just a patch. I called the Honda dealer, $206 to replace it, $25 to patch it. I looked on the internet for the tire and Discount Tire had it for $140, though it probably didn't include mount, balance blah blah but I doubt it was $66 to have those done. I tried to go to the walmart site and the window kept on closing. I had husband look it up. $9.50 to repair the tire...guess where I went!

Saving money

Since I won't be going to the store for a few days I figured I would write about saving money. Specifically, what I and my family have done to save (or make) money over this weekend and today.

1. This is more of what we didn't do, we did not go out to eat. When we first started cutting back we would go out to lunch or dinner once a week. This month MOST of us have only gone out once and that was ONLY because it was #1 birthday. We went to Chili's but neither my husband or myself really enjoyed the food. That might partly have to do with the fact we are watching what we eat (I Lost 10 lbs!) but restaurant food is so salty in general. That was all I could taste.

2. We ate leftovers for lunch on Saturday and Sunday dinner. I was busy all day on Sunday (which is it's own number) and didn't feel like cooking.

3. Drove the 2001 truck instead of my 2008 Honda Odyssey for my shopping over the weekend. When I am going to be running around I would rather use the truck that has over 130,000 miles than my Odyssey that has 6000. We learned a HARD lesson in the summer about miles, condition and brand...lesson learned thank you very much. Now if we had only purchased a USED Honda Odyssey we would be better off. The vehicle we traded in, I (and yes I did most of it) had put 25,000 miles on it the first year alone. Purchased Nov 2005 traded in June 2008 with 77,000 miles on it and not in the greatest condition.

4. Saved the chicken back and wings from our Chicken fricassee dinner on Saturday to make chicken stock today. Even though it didn't make a whole lot of stock, it still made enough that I won't have to buy a few cans (though I do get those cans for $.02 each which is tax).

5. Served Chicken Fricassee for dinner to company, instead of an expensive piece of beef. The chicken was $.57lb, even had we had hamburgers those were $1.99lb.

6. Made the chicken stock today.

7. Took my son out to go pick up soda and beer cans on the road to earn him extra money. When you are 9 yrs old there are not a lot of ways to make money. I explained to him that I had read about someone that takes her 2 kids out to get cans from the sides of the road. Well, we went out for about 3 hours total and he got 2 trash bags worth of CRUSHED cans. I figured it out, it is about $.02 a can. Today when he came home from school he was ready to head out again today! Side note, people are PIGS!

8. Hung my clothes to dry INSIDE the house. We have an HOA rule that we can't hang outside, not that I really want to with it being 45 outside anyways.

I hung the shirts on hangers (all our shirts are put on hangers anyway), and the socks I went ahead and paired them up before I clipped them to the hangers.

I love getting the mail!

Remember how when you were a little kid and your birthday was close and you loved getting the mail? I would get so excited and rip open the envelopes and open the card looking for the money. Now a days I don't get cards with money in them for my birthday or holidays. BUT I get just as excited when the mail comes. Today I saw the mail carrire going down the street in front of mine and I got all excited. I wondered what great things she will bring me.

Today this is what I got
10 Box Tops for Education (I sent her a rebate form I had)
1 Phamplet of rebate forms and coupons (I sent her some rebate forms)
1 Gift card to use anywhere for $20 (rebate from last month from purchasing gift cards)
20 $.50 off 2 Green Giant ANY veggies coupons (purchased these on Ebay)
10 $2 off Gillette shampoo, conditioner or styling product coupons (Purchased these on ebay)

It just like my birthday!

I have been wheeling and dealing lately. I have been trading for thse things or outright buying them. I am getting a little bit better at trading, though I still find it difficult. I would rather just buy my rebate forms. I have a very hard time finding them here lately but it is so worth my money (usually $1 a form) to buy them. Today the rebate form I used I (or my son) actually found the receipts on the ground or in the store. People just leave them (litterbugs!) and I pick them up! You never know when you might need a receipt with something someone else bought. Today I used 2 receipts that were found. One had Deli Meat and the other had a frozen pizza.

Also while looking for some rebate forms I haven't done yet, I stumbled across the co-owner of the site I play on and she was looking for some specific coupons. I knew I had BETTER than what she wanted. I made her an offer and we traded Coke codes for my coupons that I probably wasn't going to use anyway before they expired.

What one person considers trash is truly another's treasure.

Coupon purchase and P+G rebate

Yesterday I decided rather then buy a couple of papers I would go ahead and buy some coupons from eBay. I purchased $22.98 worth of coupons, however the majority of the coupons will yeild me free items. I purchased 270 coupons (in batches of 10-15-20) Some I will probably give to a few people. The nice thing about purchasing them this way is I don't need to clip or sort them myself, just file them away.

What will I get for free with these coupons?
A Lot of and by "A Lot" I mean between 10-80 of each item

-Reese Whips
-Gillette Shampoo
-Muir Glen Tomato Products
-Sweet Sue Chicken Broth
-Green Giant Veggies
-Muellers Spagetti

There is a rebate reminder that I found in this past weeks Proctor and Gamble coupon circular. I had originally seen the Buy $50 worth of Proctor and Gamble Products between Dec 15th and Jan 31st -and get $120 worth of coupons, but at the time I thought I don't buy that much of that brand. I saw the rebate form today and looked at a picture with some of the P&G brands shown. Then I started thinking. All of the Oil Of Olay soaps I was getting for free qualify and the Gillette Shampoo that was cheap and the Downy I purchased all during Super Doubles at HT a few weeks back qualify. I dug through my receipts that I have in a big box and found $35 worth of receipts. I then went and looked at the upcoming CVS forum for any P&G deals coming, sure enough there is Free Gillette Shampoo after coupon and ECB next week, limit 5...That is over $20 worth of P&G products and all I need!

I have also decided after having searched back 6 months of my ONE box of receipts I am going to seperate them by month to make it a little easier for me to find thing. I am a piler filer and I think I can make this simple change...hhhuuummm we'll see I guess.

Coupon Karma BiLo, Food Lion

I beleive in coupon Karma. If I see someone that is in line ahead or behind me and I see they are purchasing something I have a coupon for and probably won't use I give them the coupon. Sometimes I just hand it to the cashier and say "Here they want to use the coupon." and so far they have been very appreciative.

Today I went to get my Oil changed in my van and since I was over in that area I decided to fix the errors from the day before. I went to customer service at BiLo and show them my receipt and showed them how the coupons didn't double to the full amount. After the manager looked at them after a good several minutes and making me explain every coupon I had used and what it was for, she decided that YES I did deserve my $1.10 back that they should have credited me for.

I wondered around the store finding items that were super cheap or free. I would have gotten more Green Giant Steamers but they only had Mixed veggies left, I wanted anything but them.

I settled on
1 Kelloggs Cereal ($1Q) sale Bogo $3.39/2
1 Air Wick Lumin Air fake candle ($5Q) clearance $5.25

Total Saved $12.90
Total $1.24 on my gift card

I went to Food Lion to get my purchase from the other day fixed. He gave me $2.15 back in cash after I explained why I had a $2 off your $5 produce coupon (and yes the answer was "because I purchased $5 worth of produce and I printed the coupon off YOUR Food Lion site.")
and then I purchased-

15 Glade Candle Holders ($2Q) clearance $2
1.41 lbs Grapes ($2 off $5 produce)
.3lb 1 banana (I was hungry and needed $5 worth of produce)
4 Reese Whips ($1/2) Bogo $.89/2
2 Extra Gum (Bogo Q) Bogo sale
.07lb grapes (I WAS $.02 SHORT, I ended up just taking from what I had purchased to get $.02!)
2 Air Wick Mini ($5Q) close out $5.25
1 Altiods Mini ($1Q) close out $1.24

Total savings coupons and specials-$88.28
Total paid $4.47 ($3.40 was sales TAX!!!)

While I was getting waited on at Food Lion the lady behind me put her stuff on the belt. She definately had a lot of produce, more than $5 worth, so I gave her one of my $2 off $5 Flip. She thanked me up and down. Then while we were bagging up my candle holders and she asked what they were. I put one in her cart and said "You can have one." And she smiled and said that she couldn't do that. I told her that it was ok, they were free and really I am not that generous since I didn't really pay for it (other than the $.14 in tax). She was still very happy.

My goal the rest of this month is to not take out my grocery allowance of $1.50 (yes I lowered it $100 a month). I want to use only my funds listed below.

Total spent $177.47
Total saved $647.17 (coupons+gift cards used)

Eye Dr Appointment South of the City

My youngest had an eye doctor appointment south east of the city, I live north west, so it was a good distance away. Since this doctor is way down there why not hit some stores on the way?

My first stop was Lowes Foods-BOGO Electrsol is what made me get there first thing.

I did 4 orders and totally flubbed up bought something that I thought was cheaper (buy 2/3) and I had to return them...so my total is out of whack.

7 Electrasol Gel/Tab packs ($2.50Q) BOGO sale $5.75/2
2 Lowes Food Pretzels ($.50 store Q) sale $.99
3 Cressent Rolls ($.35Q) sale $1
8 Muellers Spagetti ($.55/2) sale 2/$1

Total savings $50.93
Total OOP $4.64

Went to a Food Lion to look for Beer Rebates...didn't find any, but got

2.11lbs grapes
1.16lb onions (flip $2 off $ 5 produce)
2 Cheez Its ($1/2) sale $2

1 Cabot Cottage Cheese $2.59
1 8# bag Oranges (Flip $2 off $5 produce-works on REG price) sale $4.99
2 Altoids ($1Q) sale $1.99

total saved $11.38
Total OOP $12.33
I think I was overcharged for the Altoids, they should have been $.99 but weren't.

Then we went to his Eye Doctor. Knowing this person is ALWAYS behind, a 1 hour wait is normal for her (but worth in IMO) I brought in my coupon box. I got all of them filed (I didn't do this past Sunday's) and started to clean out expireds. I also found a rebate for Windex that is BOGO at HT and a rebate form for the Orajel I bought yesterday so yesterdays deals are even better!

Hit a Harris Teeter when I remembered that Windex is BOGO and I have a REBATE!!! The first one we went to I found some wine tags (no I do not take them all unless there is only one or two left). The second one I went ahead and purchased

1 Windex Anit Bacterial ($.40Q) sale BOGO $3.99/2
1 Scrubbing Bubbles ($.75Q) sale Bogo $3.79/2
1 Bread ($1.50 WT) sale $1.50-free bread to go with my free spagetti!

total saved $9.19
Total OOP $1.91

The nice thing is the Windex is a rebate item. I made sure to scan my card last so the $3.99 is alone at the top....MONEY MAKER!

I also just found a rebate for $5 for taking my kid to the doctor and buying 2 different Lysol products, the neat thing is it started last year 1-1-08 so all I have to do is find the receipt from my Lysol Wipes that I got for FREE during triples and my free after coupon Lysol toliet bowl cleaner for a different trip....COOL! So today alone I am submittig $16.99 in rebates

What no beer aisle?

I have met a new couponing friend, or as I like to think of it a new eager to learn mind. I have been educating her on how to save money. One of the things I am trying to get her into is beer rebates. She like so many others thought "but I don't drink beer" in North Carolina you don't need to puchase the beer (or wine) to qualify for the rebate.

Today I needed to hit up Food Lion for more Lean Cuisines. I decided I would go ahead and go to Stanely to the Food Lion there where there is also a BiLo next door this way I can check to see if they have any beer rebates or wine tags.

I go to Food Lion and walk down almost every aisle looking for coupons and any awesome deals I hadn't seen listed on hotcouponworld.com. I get to the end and see my Lean Cuisines and I pick out 20 to buy. Here is what I got-

20 Lean Cuisine ($1/2Q) on sale 50% off- 1.50-$1.70 each
4 Reese Whips ($1/2) sale Bogo-$.44 each

Total coupons and sales $44.70
Total OOP $21.20

I take my items out to the car and I tell my son we have to go back in I forgot to go down the Beer aisle. We go back inside and make 2 trips around, no beer or wine. I think to myself is this a dry city/county?
We go next door to BiLo, I figure I will look there and see if they have beer/wine. I found some good deals I bought (they double coupons up to $.99)

7 Equal 115 pks ($2.50/1Q) sale bogo
20 Yoplait Yogurts ($.40/6Q) sale $.50
4 Juicey Juice ($.50/2Q) sale bogo
2 Lance Cracker Sandwiches ($.25/1Q) sale $2
5 Vitamin water ($.50/1Q) sale $1
1 Powerade (free wyb 2 Vitamin Water) $1.39
1 Wise Popcorn ($.25/1Q) sale $2.50
Total coupons and specials $67.31
Total to be paid $9.98 used gift card to pay
Cashier forgot to give me bag credit $.30-got it in cash
I went out in to the parking lot and someone asked me a question and I asked her if it was a Dry County or city. She said yes, Stanley is, but the other cities in the county are not. Well now I know, I don't need to search for wine tags or beer rebates in Stanely.

I couldn't take it anymore!

I just had to go somewhere. Husband wanted me to get some plastic wrap for our Christmas trees so I figured since I was out, I would go to a few other stores. ALL of these stores are within 2.5 miles of my house, so I did a 4.5 mile round trip.

All this for $15.15 oop

My first stop was Lowes Home Improvement. After much debating I got
2 2mm thick 9x12 pieces of plastic wrap (painters use them as drop cloths)

Paid $6.36 put it on a Gift card

Next was Walmart...I am so not a fan of Walmart, I feel lost when I go there looking for groceries and HBA, so after making the rounds there I left and got NOTHING!

Rite Aid was next. I got in there and really didn't feel like buying anything. I did remember I had a $2 off a $5 purchase of Gift Wrap. SO I got
4 rolls total of gift wrap ($2 WT)

Saved $11.00 buying clearance and coupon
Paid $1.18 on my gift card

From there I went to Food Lion, I knew they had some coupons I wanted (Kraft 2% cheese $.75 Binkies they will double at HT, BILO and Lowes Foods), I also wanted to see how much Lean Cuisines are, they are on sale tomorrow for 50% off through Sunday (if interested, they range in price, $3.49 is the highest).

3 Ginger Ale (Buy 1 get 2 Free Flip) $.99
4 Altoids ($1 peelies) closeout priced $.99
2 Mentos Gum ($1.00Q) sale BOGO

Total saved $16.78
My total was $.40 (which was all tax!) The Altoids and Mentos were free after coupon...The peelies for the Altoids are on the cans themselves!

Stockpile items for dinner

Today I have been busy taking down the christmas trees and cleaning. Trying to mix it up for dinner tonight I figured we would have swiss steak. All of my ingredients are from my stock piled items.

Swiss Steak
2T oil (I used Olive)
1lb Cube Steak
1 onion
2 cans tomatoes (I used fire roasted)
1 small can tomato sauce (I accidently grabbed a basil flavored one)
water to swish around the cans
3 shakes Worshshire sauce
2 T brown sugar
Rice or noodles

Put oil in a pan, along with meat sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cut onion into slices and put in with the meat. When meat is browned (or partially cooked) add the rest of ingredients. Bring to a boil and let simmer for atleast an hour or until your husband comes home and is ready to eat.

Serve over rice or noodles with a green veggie (all that I got for free at triples during the past year).

I love getting the mail!-Rebates are worth it!

I went to get the mail today and what did I get? $36 in rebate checks!
What did I have to buy you ask?

$100 gift card for Lowes Home Improvement cost me nothing other than the $100 to buy it. With that purchase I received another $20 Lowes Gift card and I also got a $10 off a $50 purchase coupon for Lowes. That qualified me for my $20 rebate check.

$50 Best Buy gift card (used it to buy Christmas gifts) cost me nothing other than the $50 to buy it. Which also earned me a $10 off your next order catalina for Food Lion. That qualified me for my $10 rebate.

2 Bags M&M-cost $1.99 oop (after $1Q)
1 Gillette Gift Set that had, 1 Razor, 1 deodorant, 1 shampoo, 1 body wash-cost $9.99 oop (after $4Q)
Also as part of those purchases it helped me achieve a $10 gift card for Rite Aid (Gift of Savings at Rite Aid, buy $50 worth of stuff, get a $10 gift card).

Last year I received over $900 in rebates from
Walgreens
Rite Aid
various Manufactures (for try me free items)
Kelloggs
Smuckers
Beer distributors
Wine distributors
American Express
Ebates
Plus many more....

And that was starting in June, I didn't really do rebates before that-except a try me free here and there. In May I really started concentrating on the Beer rebates (No beer purchase necessary, which is good we don't really drink beer). Also I didn't start Ebates until May ($74.37 from ebates for $2008). Right now I have $99.69 coming from Ebates just for last quarter (October-December) alone and that is not included in my $900 for 2008!
